Originating
on the Sega Dreamcast, 'Shenmue' was a unique blend of martial
arts action and real time adventure that was critically
acclaimed for its hugely atmospheric gameplay that took place
in an expansive environment. This sequel, which
eventually made it's way to the X-Box, retains all the
excitement of the first but with more action, improved
graphics and an equally engaging story. However, what
really sets it apart from other games in it's ilk is the
passing nods to Asian cinematic moments (one scene in
particular is very reminiscent of 'Project A Part Two') and
the uniquely Japanese touches that all make the world of
Shenmue so fascinating. If you like immersive adventure
games and Asian movies then there
is no way you should pass up the chance to play 'Shenmue II'.
Incidentally,
for those of you worried about picking up the sequel without
playing the original, the X-Box edition comes with a well put
together DVD movie that summarises the events of the first
game.
