TAI CHI MASTER  (1993)

A.K.A. - Twin Warriors

Reviewed by Phil Mills

Chin Siu Ho and Jet Li are two young men who have been raised in the Shaolin temple.  Lee is content with his life in the temple but Hao seeks fame and fortune.  During a martial arts contest in the temple, Hao fights with deadly blows and the two friends are forced to leave the temple.  In the outside world Hao joins the army whilst Lee hooks up with a gang of rebels (Michelle Yeoh amongst them).  The army and the rebels do battle several times and Lee loses his memory during conflict.  He then creates the style of Tai Chi to defeat his old friend, who is now consumed with power.

For 'Tai Chi Master', Yuen Woo Ping allows the plot take a backseat so that he can let rip with his action expertise which creates one of his most fight-filled movies to date.  Utilising his trademark wirework combined with classical styles, Woo Ping manages to harness such energy within the duels here that they really explode off the screen.  Stars Li and Yeoh are also on very fine form and look at their most comfortable when Woo Ping is at the helm, giving sturdy acting performances as well as putting their martial arts experience to good use.

Forget the over hyped 'Matrix', this is what Yuen Woo Ping is all about. The same goes for Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, who are both allowed to fully showcase what they are capable of.  There is no disputing the originality and class contained in this movie so if you love action this is a must-own.

Region:  3

Distributor:  Scholar

Chapters:  6

Picture:  Letterboxed (4:3) non-anamorphic transfer around 1:70:1. Overall, this is a budget release which is in surprisingly superior condition to the awful Universe release! Brightness is often too high and expected print damage is evident but overall, it's quite pleasant.

Sound:  Dolby Digital Mandarin 2.0 dual mono soundtrack with English and Chinese subtitles (burnt-on).

Trailers:  None.

Extras:  Inevitable Synopsis (same one featuring on back artwork), everything is in Chinese bar the subtitles and minor (mainly incorrect) DVD info.

Notes:  Despite reports of a longer Taiwanese cut, there doesn't appear to be any additional scenes (Not in this version anyway).
